Failed the Sproochentest? Your Retake Plan
Failing after years here stings, but the retake is very winnable if you fix the right thing. Here is how to diagnose what went wrong and what to do next.
Failing the Sproochentest after years of living here stings. But the retake is very winnable, and most people pass the second time, because now they know exactly what the exam feels like. The trick is to fix the right thing, not to start over.
You can retake it
There is no limit on attempts. You re-register through the MyINL portal once your results arrive, and pay the EUR 75 fee again. Your eventual pass certificate never expires.
First, diagnose what actually went wrong
You get a score per section, so use it. Ask one question: was it speaking or listening?
- Speaking was the problem. This is the fixable one, and the one that matters most, since speaking alone can pass you. Usually the cause is freezing, not grammar: you reached for answers you did not have the words for, or went silent. The fix is answering at your level and drilling reusable answers until they are automatic.
- Listening was the problem. Listening is B1, a level up, and it improves with exposure, not cramming. Twenty minutes a day of Luxembourgish radio or podcasts moves it more than the occasional long session.
You may be closer than you think
Remember the scoring rule: if speaking reaches 50%, you pass regardless of listening. If you were close, a small lift on the speaking side is often all you need. Do not assume you have to raise everything.
Do not re-study everything
The most common retake mistake is starting from scratch and burning out again. You already have most of it. Target the one section that fell short, rehearse out loud, and simulate the exam so the room feels familiar next time.
A mock exam in the real format is the cheapest way to find your weak spot before it counts.
