How to Register for the Sproochentest

You register for the Sproochentest through the Institut National des Langues, the school that runs the exam. You sign up on its MyINL portal, send in a small set of documents, and pay a 75 euro fee. The one rule people miss is the deadline: your file has to reach the INL at least one month before the exam date. Below is each step in order.

If the paperwork is the part you are dreading, here is some good news. It is the easy half, and you only do it once. The hard half is the speaking, and you can practise that.

Where you register

Registration happens online, through the MyINL portal run by the INL. You create an account, then book the Sproochentest from there. You do not pick a slot the way you would a dentist appointment. You submit your file, the INL assigns you a session, and they tell you the date. You only show up in person on the exam day itself.

If the portal shows a placeholder date or no open session, that just means the next round has not opened yet. Sessions are added in waves. Check back, or contact the INL to ask when the next registration window opens.

The deadline, and the number people confuse

Here is the part to get right, because two different numbers float around online and they are not the same.

The one that matters on your side is one month. Your file has to be in that far ahead of the exam date, or you wait for the next session.

The other number is fifteen days, and it is not a registration deadline. It is when the INL writes to tell you your exact date, time, and place. That notice lands in your inbox after you are already signed up. So anyone telling you to register fifteen days out, or three months out, is working from the wrong number.

A complete file, or nothing

You submit a complete file, called a dossier. The INL processes complete files only. If something is missing, your file is not rejected with a phone call and a chance to fix it on the spot. It simply waits, and you are pushed to the next session. One forgotten page can cost you a few months.

Your file has to be complete. An incomplete dossier is not held for you. It is pushed to the next session.

So gather everything before you start, and treat the list like a checklist:

• A copy of your valid photo ID, the same one you will bring on the day.
• Your registration form, filled in and signed.
• Proof that the 75 euro fee has been paid.

Check the current MyINL instructions for your exact case, since the documents asked for depend on your situation. Then send the whole thing at once. A complete file on time beats a perfect file that is one document short.

The fee and how to pay it

The fee is 75 euros per attempt. You pay it by bank transfer, and the reference line matters. If you leave it off, the INL may not match your payment to your file.

Keep the transfer receipt. That receipt is the proof of payment that goes into your dossier, so pay while you are putting the file together, not weeks later.

After you register

Once your file is in and accepted, you wait. About fifteen days before the exam, the INL sends your notice with the date, time, and centre. Read it closely, because it tells you which ID to bring and any current rules for the room. On the day you bring the same type of identity document you put in your file.

A few things worth knowing now:

• If you do not show up, the fee is not refunded, and you have to register again.
• There is no cap on attempts. If you do not pass, you re-register through MyINL once your results arrive and pay the fee again.
• The pass certificate never expires, so you only do this once.

What you are actually signing up for

The exam is smaller than the paperwork makes it feel. It is two parts on one day, with no written section.

The speaking comes first: a short interview, then you describe a picture. It is graded at A2, the level of everyday talk. Listening runs 35 minutes at B1, three short audio passages with your answers tapped in on a tablet. You pass with at least 50 percent in speaking, or with a speaking-and-listening average of at least 50 percent. We break that down in how the Sproochentest is scored.

You do not need any Luxembourgish for the form. You will want a few easy lines for the room, though, like a calm opener when you sit down: Moien! Wéi geet et Iech? (Hello! How are you?). More of those in what happens on exam day.
